Hataori Emergency Shelter

Joaquim waved Perrin over to where they stood near the entrance, then grasped Cassidy firmly by the shoulders. “You need to stay here. These emergency shelters are the safest places on the planet. And if you need anything at all, Perrin will take care of you.”

Cassidy’s face contorted in displeasure. “You’re not going to stay with me?”

“No. There are Rasu that need dispatching, and a lot of people who haven’t made it to refugee centers that need protecting until they do.” It was a lucky thing this shelter was only half a kilometer from their apartment. The sounds of sonic booms and explosions had grown deafening a few short minutes after they’d started heading here. They hadn’t seen any Rasu, but he suspected it wouldn’t be long now.

“Let somebody else do it! The military. Justice. It’s their jobs to protect us, but it’s not yours.”

No, it’s my life. He tried to keep his frustration off his features. She was scared. This was her first alien invasion. “This is what I do, okay? And I’m actually really good at it.” His expression brightened as Perrin finally broke through the jostling crowd in the lobby and reached them. Strawberry-blonde braids bounced over her shoulders, and she wore khaki pants and a fitted top that straddled the line between street wear and office attire. She looked a little harried, but good. Confident.

“See, Perrin’s right here. I’ll bet she needs your help keeping these people calm.”

“Oh my goodness, I wouldn’t refuse it.”

“There you go. Keep yourself busy, and the hours will fly by. We’ll rid Mirai of these Rasu, and I’ll be back for you in no time.”

“Joaquim…” Cassidy rested her forehead on his “…are you sure?”

“I’m sure. I couldn’t forgive myself if I sat comfortable and cozy in here while the Rasu were rampaging through my streets.”

“These aren’t your streets.”

“Yeah. They are.” He shot Perrin a pleading look.

She laid a hand on Cassidy’s arm. “Hey, come with me. We’ve got palettes of water bottles downstairs we need to move to the refreshment stations. Then we need to put a bunch of chairs out, because people will tire of standing around before long.”

Cassidy glanced toward the doors. “You say this place is safe, but can’t the Rasu just tear through the entrance?”

“Nope. As soon as any Rasu get within a kilometer of here, adiaK blast doors will slam down and seal you in.”

“I guess that’s reassuring. Though I don’t want to be locked in a tomb, either.”

Perrin smiled in encouragement. “We have enough food and water for days and days. It’ll be fine.”

He couldn’t stand it any longer. He leaned down and kissed Cassidy on the cheek. “Love you. I’ll be back.” Then he sprinted out the entrance before the blast doors trapped him inside and away from the fight.
